Where is Kenilworth?
Did you know Kenilworth is located along the beautiful Mary River? The river flows north from Maleny, passing through Conondale, Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro, and Maryborough before reaching the sea across from Fraser Island. This charming town is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Blackall Range and Conondale State Forest, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures.
Kenilworth’s History
So, fun fact – Kenilworth, which was originally called ‘Numabulla’ by the Aboriginal people, got its name from a cattle run owned by Richard Smith. He got the idea from a novel called “Kenilworth.” Dr. Simpson and Ludwig Leichhardt were among the first to explore the area. Richard Smith started the Kenilworth cattle run back in 1850, and it eventually joined with other runs. Thanks to the 1884 Land Act, more people settled there, bringing in families who built up a cool mix of agriculture and dairying. Fast forward to 1905, when local farmers banded together to create a butter factory. Then, in 1924, the first store opened its doors, kicking off the lively high street scene that Kenilworth is known for today.
